Overview

Format: Hybrid; in-person attendance at Coffman Theatre or attend the Live Webinar

All times listed in CST.

This course honors the work and life of Dr. John Najarian (1927-2020). Dr. Najarian served as the Departmental Chair of Surgery at the University of Minnesota from 1967-1993 and is remembered as being one of the greatest innovators in immunological science and surgery.

This course intends to review the historical development of transplantation that was influenced tremendously by Dr. Najarian; review the present context of surgery in general; discuss gaps in care and where improvement is needed; and look at novel innovations that will become the future of surgery and transplantation.

About John S. Najarian: Former Department of Surgery Chair Dr. John S. Najarian (1967-1993) died on August 31, 2020 in Stillwater, Minnesota. Under his leadership, major research, clinical and educational contributions to the field of surgery led to the development of one of the world's largest transplant programs.  In 2007, the John S. Najarian Surgical Chair in Clinical Transplantation was established in his honor. Recognized with a multitude of national and international awards, Najarian’s crowning honor is the 2004 Medawar Prize, widely deemed the world’s most prestigious award for outstanding achievement in organ transplantation.  He became a Medawar laureate for his monumental contributions to immunobiology, experimental transplantation and clinical transplantation.

At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Review the history of surgical innovations and transplantation during the “Najarian Era” (1967-1993)
  2. Discuss gaps in understanding and patient care that continue today
  3. Discuss the evolution of immunology to better understand depletional induction, its effects on the immune system and future immunosuppression strategies
  4. Review strategies for organ preservation and discuss the future optimization of organ use
