Overview

This course is planned and hosted by the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Gastroenterology has many specialized niches that continue to be at the forefront of a rapidly evolving field. This course will provide APPs and other healthcare providers with the latest and most up to date guidelines, and diagnostic and management modalities in these specialized niches that are not typically discussed in formal training.  Our goal continues to focus on the gastroenterology education of APPs as they play an integral role in this field.

Thursday evening will include a networking event including a social hour offering appetizers and refreshments followed by our Keynote Speaker, Megan Petrik, PhD, LP, ABPP. Her presentation will focus on provider wellness and finding continued “Joy in Practice” while managing complex patients in the ever-changing healthcare world.

The course on Friday will provide an overview of multiple topics in gastroenterology including functional disorders, IBD in pregnancy, acute care in GI, liver tumor and imaging, referral for IMT in severe cases of C. diff, the updated guidelines in GERD, as well as case study discussions by multiple expert faculty. Each section of lectures will be followed by panel discussions to analyze the information provided and prompt further discussion. The day will end with a lecture on debunking GI myths.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Review the updated GERD guidelines including esophageal testing that is available
  2. Articulate the diagnosis and management strategies for functional dyspepsia (or nausea and bloating)
  3. Explain the approach to a chronic cough from the GI perspective
  4. Identify liver pathology on imaging
  5. Discuss management of IBD in pregnancy including when to refer
  6. Outline the workup and diagnosis of various urgent and inpatient GI diseases
  7. Assess current treatment options for IBD
  8. Explain how to diagnose Cdiff based on updated laboratory testing, as well as when to refer for IMT
  9. Distinguish between the facts and fiction of various GI myths
