Overview

Format: Self-paced online

The Global Pediatrics Education Series ("GPEDS") is comprised of approximately 24 hours of lecture-based content delivered by pediatric specialists.

Its primary aim is to provide foundational knowledge preparation for trainees and/or practicing providers who plan to work abroad in an under-resourced area of the world. It is also suitable for those who wish to gain knowledge of global health to inform a U.S.-based clinical practice. Topics include:

  • Global child health in context
  • Disease identification and management
  • Clinical pearls
  • Preparation for global health service
  • Global health in the U.S.

The content in this short course was authored by experts in pediatric global health from the University of Minnesota and vetted by unbiased, external experts. Technical handouts and self-paced assessments round out this unique, premiere learning activity.

Target Audience
The primary audience for this course includes physicians and other health care providers working in immigrant, refugee, and travelers' health and tropical medicine.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss the health and socioeconomic factors that influence neonatal, child, and maternal survival.
  2. Utilize appropriate terminology regarding global health epidemiology and state the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related to global child health preventable diseases.
  3. Effectively manage and treat diarrhea and pneumonia, the leading causes of child mortality in low and middle income countries.
  4. Apply clinical knowledge of commonly-encountered infectious diseases prevalent in low and middle income countries.
  5. Recognize and treat common hematologic diseases, including acquired and hereditary anemias.
  6. Recognize and treat undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies using best practices.
  7. Describe role of global pediatrics domestically, including the preparation and care of internationally adopted children, refugee health, and travel medicine.
  8. Take appropriate steps to prepare for and safely travel abroad.
