Two road closures are scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 17-19, affecting travel on the East Bank.

Eastbound vehicle traffic across the Washington Avenue Bridge will not be available — vehicles should use the 10th Street Bridge from 4th Street.

From noon on Friday, Nov. 17, through late evening on Sunday, Nov. 19, Pleasant Street SE will be closed to vehicle traffic south of Arlington Street.

Format: Live in-person

This course is planned and hosted by the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. For more information, contact Steff Yorek at [email protected] or 612-625-4937.

The symposium will provide methods and expertise on transforming clinically inspired ideas into bedside reality.

Preclinical research topics include:

1) regulatory and design considerations, comments from world experts

2) current clinical needs and state of the art translational research projects discussed by leading clinicians and researchers

3) a look back into the history of medical device innovations, for inspiration on how to nurture translational research into the future

A goal of this symposium is to educate participants relative to methods and current expertise on transforming clinically inspired ideas into bedside realities. Associated topics include: regulatory and design considerations, preclinical approaches for medical technology testing, and the vital roles of academic medicine in the translational research pathways for advancing medical innovations.

The first symposium session will focus on global perspectives on medical device development. The second session will have a specific focus on cardiac device therapies. The third session will feature discussions on current research ethics and how they propel science forward and ground breaking future directions for the treatment of cardiac and solid organ disease, including: e.g., xenotransplantation and stem cell based myocardial repair.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize the steps involved in putting medical technology ideas and innovations into practice.
  2. Describe how standard preclinical animal models are used to protect human safety and efficacy.
  3. Explain the regulatory framework for approval of new treatments.
  4. List the role of all phases of preclinical and clinical research in safety and efficacy of new treatments to their patients.

Registration

Registration Rates:

Physician: $200
