Overview

Format: In-Person Course

This course is planned and hosted by the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery. For more information contact Carly Ryan, [email protected].

Over 4 days, the course will address and discuss difficult patient care issues, unaddressed needs and advances in transplantation.  The course will focus on evaluation and care of the living donor, disparities in access to transplant, increasing the number of transplants and care of the transplant recipient.  In each of these areas we will discuss difficult to solve patient care issues, advances in care and new therapies on the horizon.  Specifically discussed will be clinical research and trends in donor and recipient outcomes; increasing access to transplant; increasing use of living and deceased donor organs; organ prevention; prevention, diagnosis and treatment of rejection; new methods of organ matching, and individual recipient care problems (e.g., infection).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss living donor outcomes and concerns.
  2. Discuss ways to improve access to living and deceased transplant.
  3. Describe potential for improving long-term outcomes for transplant recipients.
  4. Describe current findings related to the prevention and treatment of transplant rejection.
  5. Outline new techniques for improving donor and recipient matching and allograft survival.
  6. Describe new and up and coming organ preservation techniques.
  7. Discuss novel solutions for increasing the availability of organs for transplantation.
