Overview

This course is planned and hosted by the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics. See the course webpage for more information and contact information.

Care for children without permanent families continues to evolve. The prompt, profound and often permanent effects of adversity on child well-being is better understood as is the need for early mental health, medical and developmental intervention for children entering both temporary and permanent family placements. Family-based rather than institutional care has become the preferred model of child protection worldwide with a greater emphasis on family preservation, reunification, kinship care and domestic adoption. Interest in adoption has increased, particularly in the Global South, where intercountry adoption is being replaced by nascent domestic adoption programs.  Finally, a growing number of investigators, professionals and artists in the field are using their lived experience as adoptees to direct their work and inform others of the range of concerns confronting adopted persons.

Plenary Session Themes

  • July 8: Welcome and Keynote
  • July 9: Understanding what’s lost when a child is deprived of permanent family care
  • July 10: Responding to the needs of children without permanent family care
  • July 11: Ensuring permanence through evidence-based practice
  • July 12: Lifelong issues in adoption: reframing the discourse through lived experience.

Preliminary agenda is now posted in the Agenda/Schedule tab above. Titles and times are subject to change.
