Overview

Format: Live In-Person

This Symposium is planned and hosted by the Department of Surgery. For more information, contact Jenn Johnson, [email protected], 612-625-8698.

This annual symposium will bring together leading experts from cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, and industry to discuss the latest innovations and therapies for structural heart and aortic disease. Attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of cutting-edge techniques to treat valvular heart disease and aortic pathologies.

The first session will focus on mitral and tricuspid valve disease, featuring presentations on state-of-the-art surgical, transcatheter, and robotic treatment options. The second session will explore aortic and pulmonic valve disease, with discussions on conventional surgical techniques and transcatheter approaches like TAVR, as well as the latest guidelines for managing patients with these conditions.

In the third session, attention will turn to aortic pathologies, covering available treatment options including both endovascular techniques and conventional open surgical approaches. This comprehensive program offers attendees valuable insights into current practices and future advancements in the field.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the historical contributions of Earl E. Bakken, Dr. Yoshio Sako, and cardiac surgery to the foundation of modern cardiac surgery.
  2. Explain mitral and tricuspid valve surgical approaches, therapies, and technological advances informed by pre-clinical and clinical trials.
  3. Identify adult and pediatric aortic and pulmonic valve diseases to understand available treatment options.
  4. Apply knowledge of aortic guidelines and new valve technologies to determine appropriate valvular therapies.
  5. Interpret innovations in endovascular therapies to triage aortic disease.
  6. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive mitral/tricuspid valve repair surgery vs. percutaneous therapies, including their limitations.
