Overview

The University of Minnesota Pulmonary & Critical Care Summit has been meticulously crafted to delve into every facet of pulmonary and critical care medicine, placing particular emphasis on the intricacies of advanced lung diseases, including the complexities surrounding lung transplantation. Its overarching objective is to furnish attendees with a thorough and up-to-date understanding of the multifaceted realm of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Participants will be empowered to augment their existing knowledge base and stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.

This conference will also bridge the practice gaps prevalent within the specialty, catering to both academic and community-based healthcare providers. Through comprehensive discussions and immersive sessions, the course aims to address the nuanced challenges encountered in clinical practice. 

Designed to be inclusive and enriching, this course extends its benefits to a diverse array of healthcare professionals. Whether physicians, advanced practice providers, medical trainees, respiratory therapists, or nurses, all stand to gain invaluable insights and skills essential for delivering high-quality patient care in the realm of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

The CME credit-eligible event will be held at the award-winning McNamara Alumni Center, known for its striking architecture, and it will be facilitated and led by renowned faculty and researchers and will feature eminent external speakers. Join us for:

This course is planned and hosted by the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. For more information contact Ashley Fuchs.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Explore the latest research in pulmonary and critical care medicine at an academic quaternary referral center with emphasis on multidisciplinary management of mechanical ventilation, ECMO, ARDS, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, and multiorgan failure.
  2. Identify current clinical practice strategies and updates in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) with a focus on identifying co-morbidities, interventions that enhance quality of life, including nursing support, patient education on oxygen use, antifibrotic medications, and early integration of palliative care.
  3. Identify and discuss state-of-the-art tools in bronchoscopy and pleural interventions.
  4. Discuss the guidelines for lung transplant selection and pearls for pre- and post-transplant management.
  5. Discuss the latest updates in a broad category of obstructive lung diseases, including asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis.
  6. Discuss the optimal principles of non-invasive ventilation management, including updates in the field of Sleep Medicine.
