Overview

Format: Hybrid, learners can attend in-person or a live webinar

This course is planned and hosted by the University of Minnesota Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

Gastroenterology is a rapidly evolving field with numerous subspecialties. Across the country, including in the Midwest, APPs are frequently on the front lines of the gastroenterology clinics.  Often APPs do not get exposed to specialized training in areas of gastroenterology sub-specialization, yet are often seeing the most complex patients. There is a specific need to focus on the gastroenterology education of APPs given their important role in GI care. This course will use a variety of methods to close the existing knowledge gaps focused in the areas of: Inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, and pancreatology.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Assess current comparative effectiveness data for advanced IBD therapies
  2. Identify currently available advanced IBD therapies and state key limitations.
  3. Compare different types of drug level tests clinically available.
  4. Integrate drug level testing into practice in the context of the patient’s disease.
  5. Explain evidence-based interventions for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
  6. Define decompensated cirrhosis.
  7. Articulate management strategies for varices, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy.
  8. Identify management strategies for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
  9. Distinguish differences between ACG and IDSA guidelines for management of C difficile infection
  10. Define the natural history of microscopic colitis
  11. Review treatment options for GERD and understanding the risk and benefits of each approach to therapy
  12. Review various approaches to chronic diarrhea not otherwise specified.
