Overview

The course is designed to provide healthcare professionals involved in sideline and sports medicine coverage with practical, evidence-based education on the recognition and management of common athletic injuries and emergencies. Participants will receive instruction on primary and secondary assessment of the injured athlete, airway management techniques, head and spine emergencies, musculoskeletal trauma, joint immobilization principles, sports psychology considerations, and other medical issues commonly encountered in athletic settings. The program combines didactic presentations with hands-on skills training led by sports medicine physicians, emergency medicine specialists, athletic healthcare professionals, and ambulance service personnel.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Apply primary and secondary survey principles when evaluating an injured athlete.
  2. Recognize and manage head and spine emergencies that occur in athletic settings.
  3. Identify and respond to common musculoskeletal injuries and traumatic conditions encountered during sports participation.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate joint immobilization principles and techniques for injured athletes.
  5. Explain medical considerations commonly encountered in sports medicine and sideline care.

Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer


University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education (BOC AP#: JA0000810) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers (ATs). This program is eligible for a maximum of 3.0 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the educational program.

American Academy of PAs (AAPA)

 University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 3.0 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Other Healthcare Professionals

Other healthcare professionals, including Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists, who participate in this CE activity may submit their certificate of participation to their appropriate accrediting organizations or state boards for consideration of credit.
