Overview

Planned and hosted by the University of Minnesota’s MPS Center.

The 2027 MPS Newborn Screening and Early Detection Meeting is an essential gathering for professionals in genetics, pediatrics, public health, and rare disease research. Hosted by the University of Minnesota’s MPS Center, this event convenes leading global experts to address pressing practice gaps, emerging screening technologies, and the fast-evolving therapeutic landscape in mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) care.

Early detection in conditions like MPS I (Hurler Syndrome) and MPS II (Hunter Syndrome) is critical to prevent rapid disease progression and irreversible damage. This year’s curriculum bridges foundational knowledge with clinical performance, focusing on four core educational priorities:

  • Standardizing Screening & Diagnostic Precision: Critiquing variability in NBS algorithms, result interpretation, and second-tier testing to eliminate diagnostic uncertainty, resolve pseudodeficiencies, and accurately characterize phenotypes in asymptomatic infants.

  • Navigating the Evolving Therapeutic Landscape: Evaluating new clinical evidence across enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), gene therapy, and other novel platforms to guide individualized treatment plans and tackle neurological manifestations.

  • Strengthening Multidisciplinary Care Coordination: Integrating interdisciplinary communication strategies among geneticists, neurologists, transplant teams, pediatricians, and rehabilitation specialists to prevent fragmented care and ensure timely, lifelong management.

  • Addressing Persistent Evidence Gaps: Analyzing unresolved questions around genotype-phenotype correlations, predictive biomarkers, timing of interventions, and long-term benefit-risk profiles to refine prognostication and personalized treatment.

Whether you are a clinician, researcher, or patient advocate, the 2027 meeting offers an interactive environment—featuring case-based discussions and expert panels—designed to improve diagnostic accuracy, care delivery, and long-term outcomes for individuals identified through newborn screening programs.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Explore the latest research in pulmonary and critical care medicine at an academic quaternary referral center with emphasis on multidisciplinary management of mechanical ventilation, ECMO, ARDS, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, multiorgan failure, and end of life care.
  2. Identify current clinical practice strategies and updates in interstitial lung diseases (ILD) with a focus on identifying co-morbidities, interventions that enhance quality of life, including nursing support, patient education on oxygen use, antifibrotic medications, and early integration of palliative care.
  3. Identify and discuss state-of-the-art tools in bronchoscopy and pleural interventions.
  4. Discuss the guidelines for lung transplant selection and pearls for pre- and post-transplant management.
  5. Discuss the latest updates in a broad category of obstructive lung diseases, including asthma, COPD, and bronchiectasis.
  6. Discuss the optimal principles of non-invasive ventilation management, including updates in the field of Sleep Medicine.
