Overview

The MAGIC conference annually convenes clinicians in geriatrics to explore a wide range of topic including: Alzheimer's disease/dementia, THC/CBD, deprescribing, antipsychotic use, BEERS criteria, STOPP/START criteria, managing anxiety, delirium, behaviors (both pharmacological and non-pharmacological), MN Medication Repository Program, and other topics related to pharmacological interventions.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe approaches to reduce use of inappropriate medication, polypharmacy, and medication non-adherence.
  2. Describe optimal use of newer medications for common geriatric conditions.
  3. Explain recent Minnesota policy updates related to care of older people.
  4. Identify ways to become a leader in geriatrics related to teaching, policy advocacy, or clinical practice improvement.
  5. Discuss how to collaborate across platforms to address medication prescribing and usage.

Registration Policies

  • Pre-registration is requested by October 22, 2024.
  • On-site registration will be allowed as space permits. All on-site registrants must use their own device to submit their registration and payment by credit card via CE Portal (cash/check not accepted). Registration through CE Portal is required even if attendance is free-of-charge.
  • Special needs, such as dietary restrictions, lactation room, etc., should be requested in advance. These requests cannot always be honored on site.
  • Cancellation Policy:  In the event you need to cancel your registration, the registration fee, less a $25 administrative fee, will be refunded if you notify us by 4:30 p.m. Central Time October 18, 2024. No refunds will be made after this date.
  • UMN Office of Continuing Professional Development (OCPD) and/or our partner in providing the activity reserves the right to cancel any activity due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event the activity is cancelled, registration fees will be refunded. UMN OCPD and/or our partner in providing the activity is not responsible for any travel-related costs, charges, or expenses, including but not limited to fees assessed by airline, travel, or lodging agencies.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education and the Minnesota Association of Geriatrics Inspired Clinicians (MAGIC). University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Credit Designation Statements

American Medical Association
The University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education designates this live activity  for a maximum of 8.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
This activity is awarded up to 8.5 ANCC contact hours.

American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA)
University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 8.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (ABPLM)
This CME activity has been pre-approved by the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (ABPLM) for a total of 5.75 management hours and 4.25 clinical hours toward certification as a Certified Medical Director (CMD) in post-acute and long-term care medicine. The CMD program is administered by the ABPLM.  Each physician should claim only those hours of credit actually spent on the activity. 

Minnesota Board of Executives for Long-Term Services and Supports 
This program is certified for up to 8.5 hours for LNHA, LALD, and/or HSE continuing education by UMN's Long Term Care Administration Program through the Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports.

Pharmacists & Other Healthcare Professionals
Individuals who participate in this CE activity may submit their statement of participation to their appropriate accrediting organizations or state boards for consideration of credit. The participant is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education.

Note: The Thursday webinar session on November 7 is accredited for up to 2.25 hours/credits. The Friday in-person session on November 8 is accredited for up to 6.25 hours/credits. You must attend both dates in their entirety to be eligible for full credit.
